DCSD Sustainability Operations & Maintenance

Energy Reduction

The Sustainability Department has improved Energy management by adding eGauge monitors, maintaining PV and being actively involved in Strategic Energy Management through Xcel, Still Water, and Pivot Energy.  DCSD participates annually in ReNew Our Schools energy competitions.  Results below are a combined effort of students and staff creating simple behavior changes.

DCSD Waste Diversion

All locations in DCSD have access to regularly scheduled recycling. DCSD recycles glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard, plastics, and tin with Waste Management's single-stream recycling program.  Among these efforts, DCSD finds many other ways to keep hard-to-recycle items out of the landfill.   DCSD's waste diversion rate is currently at 25%.

e-recycle

Electronic recycling is an ongoing effort at DCSD. All expired, outdated, and obsolete electronics are sent to the DCSD warehouse.  From there, they go to an e-certified reputable recycling company.

Metal Recycling

Unwanted or unused metal parts get recycled through Rocky Mountain Metal Recycling.

Composting

Composting is very much supported throughout the district.  Some schools perform on-site "backyard" composting at their school. The scraps from the cafeteria get turned into compost and used in School Gardens.  9 commercial composing schools are associated with a FRWD grant.  These schools track their composting weight each day.

Textile Recycle

DCSD has 26 schools that have active textile recycling available at their school.

Solar Electricity Generated

DCSD has 30 schools with rooftop solar.  The solar arrays generate electricity for the school reducing the amount of electricity the school pulls from the grid.

CNG Buses

DCSD Transportation Department has 3 Compressed Natural Gas Buses.   These buses use Renewable Compressed Natural Gas (C-RNG).  Not only do they help with pollution, but they are also using gas made from organic material.

Battery Recycle

West Support Center Warehouse collects the batteries from the schools and recycles them a few times a year.
