Give your plastic bag a new life
Plastic Bag Recycle
Have you ever walked into the grocery store and realized you have forgotten your reusable bags? Yeah, me too. It happens to the best of us. But no worries, just make sure your plastic bag goes to the proper place to become something new! No need to throw it in the trash,
RECYCLE IT!!
Carbon Footprint
Lower your carbon footprint
Many of us want to support the environment in a positive and sustaining way. Reducing your carbon footprint can be simple and easy to do. Below are some tips to help you and your students continue the journey to a sustainable new year!
Textile Recycling
Reduce, Reuse, Re-think, Recycle
You may notice that some of our schools have a US-Again bin. These bins are for clothes, shoes recycle, and linens. The community members are welcome to use these bins, as it helps out the schools. If you notice the bin is full, feel free to let US Again know about it and they will empty it within 48 hours. To date, our schools have collected 125,147 pounds of clothes, and 313 trees have been planted on our behalf. Thank you for supporting this cause!
Backyard Compost
Food Scraps Are A Natural Resource
Composting is a great way for your family to learn about food, resource recovery, and closed-loop systems. There are so many benefits of having your own compost:
- Composting reduces the amount of food you put in the landfill
- Create your own Humus (finished compost) for your garden soil
- Teaches that food is a natural resource and should not be wasted
- Composting helps reduce your carbon footprint
- Composting saves money
- It is easier than you think and it is fun
- Waste less water because compost helps with soil water retention
- Humus helps keep unwanted pests off of your plants
- Reduces the impact of chemical fertilizers
Commercial Compost
Food Should Never Be Trash
Commercial Composting is another great way to get involved in keeping organics out of the landfill. Luckily we have some new companies that support commercial composting in Douglas County:
Commercial Composting is a little different from composting at your home. Unlike backyard compost, any food is acceptable for commercial compost collection. Compostable containers are not accepted at this time, only organic material. Download the acceptable compost bags here and take a look at do's and don'ts below.
Compost services range from:
- Commercial Pick Up
- Residential Pick-Up
- Neighborhood Drop-Off Location
Regardless of what you choose for your composting needs, know that 1 simple change in how you see waste will make a huge impact!
Electronic Recycle
Where can you take your electronics to be recycled?
Why should we dispose of our electronics responsibly?
- Many old electronic devices contain toxic substances that include lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, polyvinyl chloride, and chromium. When e-waste is tossed into landfills, these chemicals leach into the soil, polluting the groundwater as well as the air.
- Electronics are made of components that contain valuable raw materials. Recycling old devices saves energy. It also means that fewer raw materials need to be drawn from nature to create new devices.
- Reusing old devices prevents e-waste by keeping it out of landfills. It also saves the resources used to recycle them. Additionally, reusing electronics helps other, less-fortunate people in your community. So take your old devices to be refurbished (if possible) and give them a new life.
- Finally, recycling saves raw materials that can be repurposed by producing new devices. As a result, energy is saved, pollution is reduced, and there are fewer greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere.
Get Involved
Community Involvment
Have you ever heard the saying "More hands, less work?" There is much truth to that saying. If you are interested in getting more involved with your community, you have come to the right place! Below are some of our wonderful partners that could always use some extra help.
Create a partnership with nature while being a part of the Plum Creek Restoration Project. The stream restoration brings back native plants and animals along the corridor and protects the health of watersheds. This is a great outside volunteer opportunity for your family to work together to make improvements in our own "backyard".
